Sebum

The scalp’s natural oil, produced by glands beside each follicle.

Soumm · Physiology

Definition

An oily secretion that lubricates hair and skin and contributes to barrier function. Production varies with genetics, hormones, age and climate.

Both excess and deficiency cause discomfort.

Practical note

Aggressive washing to remove sebum often prompts more production. Gentler, less frequent washing is usually better tolerated.

A note on evidence

Hair responds to many things at once: sleep, nutrition, hormonal changes, scalp condition and stress among them. Published here for education only; individual concerns should be discussed with a qualified healthcare professional.
