How chronic stress influences hair wellness

The mechanism, the timescale, and what can reasonably be done.

Dr. Kavita Menon · MBBS, DVD · Mumbai

Acute versus chronic

A single stressful event and a year of sustained pressure affect the body differently. The second is harder to identify because there is no clear moment to point to.

Patients frequently describe their stress as normal, which usually means constant.

What the hair cycle does under strain

Prolonged elevation of stress hormones can push follicles into the resting phase earlier than they would otherwise enter it, producing diffuse thinning rather than patches.

Because the cycle is measured in months, both the onset and the recovery are slow enough to feel invisible.

Practical advice I give

Sleep first, then iron and protein intake, then a realistic plan for the stressor itself. These are unglamorous and they are what works.

A weekly oiling ritual is a reasonable addition, mostly because the ten minutes of quiet is doing something useful in its own right.
